Burnout deep dives: People Pleasing 4
Today we focus on the 7Rs for lasting change- helping you to break engrained habits and make behaviour changes that stick!
In the final of my people pleasing series, I’m going to be focusing on the 7Rs for lasting change, to help you to break the engrained habits of people pleasing. Now, The 7 Rs of lasting change are not unique to behaviour change in people pleasers, they can be applied to any behaviour change process and habit formation in any situation or circumstance, so you can take these tips and use them in other areas of your life and work.
The disappointing truth about behaviour change is that it is really hard to make any change stick. Just look at the huge numbers of best selling books on behaviour change, the thousands of productivity apps and millions of habit hack videos available on social media. If it was that easy to undo years and years of engrained and learned behaviour (as you typically have in people pleasing because, more often than not, people pleasing begins in childhood) then we’d all be doing it and there wouldn’t be such an appetite for behaviour change support.
Making change stick is really difficult. However, with these tips you’ll learn practical strategies for making those crucial changes in people pleasing - or any other aspect of your behaviour that you wish to change- genuinely last! Even better, it doesn’t have to mean getting up at 5am to work on your productivity and wellbeing when you’d far rather be asleep (unless, of course, that’s what you want to do and that’s in alignment with your values!). These tips are practical and easily accessible to all.
It’s a lot easier to start some new type of life-enhancing behaviour than it is to keep it going. How can we sustain new patterns of behaviour, when we’ve done them for so long they become habitual and completely engrained? ‘The Seven Rs’, as outlined by Russ Harris are a really great way to strategise your behaviour change. Use these top tips to help you sustain any changes you make. I did Acceptance and Commitment Therapy training with Russ and I highly recommend his book The Happiness Trap, if you have not already read it!
The Seven Rs are: Reminders, Records, Rewards, Routines, Relationships, Reflecting, and Restructuring. Let’s go through them, and what you need to successfully do to make behaviour change stick:
1) Reminders
