Deep dives: Why knowing your values really matters
Don't skip this! Knowing your values is essential to both protect you from burnout, and forms a key part of your recovery process too.
Welcome to the September deep dive series, which this month is going to focus on why knowing your values really matters, both to protect you from burnout, but also as an essential part of the recovery process.
My second slide into burnout forced me to go back and work out what I had missed the first time around in my recovery journey. I discovered that there is a known burnout recovery process, and that revision of your values is stage 4 of this process. Heading back into the desperate depths of burnout again - and at this point I was very motivated to not end up in another crisis- I took several steps to help myself, including this deep work on my values. I had no idea that there was a known recovery process, let alone that working on my values was part of it, and furthermore I had no idea just how important it was. And if a doctor with a neuroscience background and 20 years of clinical experience didn’t get it, then I suspect that not many other people do either. If this is you, then I am here to help.
Going through this process taught me just how fundamental knowing your values is both for burnout prevention, and for recovery too. Don’t skip it and risk burnout again (or at all!) like I inadvertently did. I’m going to give you all the essential tools you need not just to identify your values, but also to use them successfully in every essential decision you need to make about your life and your career.
Over the next month, we will cover:
What values are
Why knowing them, and working in alignment with your values is protective against burnout
Why revising your values forms an essential part of your recovery if you have burnt out (clue: it forms an entire known stage of the recovery process, it’s that important!)
How to work out your values
How to engage in values based decision making in all aspects of your life- both work and your personal life- so that you can take empowered steps to both burnout prevention, and recovery too!
